Our FOCUS

studying health across the lifespan

WHY it matters

We study the biology of healthspan, because we want to know what goes on at the biological (cellular) level as we age, and how it affects our overall health across the entire lifespan. One thing we know for certain is that “good stuff” like exercise improves healthspan, and we’re trying to determine if biological processes stimulated by exercise can help us understand other ways to improve healthspan (like nutrition, pharmaceuticals or genetics). We are particularly interested in —

brain health across the lifespan

neurodegenerative diseases that threaten healthy brain aging

Our research

Key projects

We’re always coming up with new ideas, but here’s a sampling of our current work.

JUNK DNA, INFLAMMATION, AGING AND HEALTHSPAN

MECHANISMS OF BRAIN AGING AND NEURODEGENERATION

BIOLOGICAL AGING CLOCKS, EXERCISE & HEALTHSPAN

Health and Exercise Science

We're part of the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University, one of eight academic units housed within the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Center for healthy aging

We're also part of the Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Aging at CSU (pictured here). The Center is a catalyst for interdisciplinary research and evidence-based outreach and education about healthy aging.
